The alien autopsy film is a controversial movie which was originally alleged to be a filmed autopsy of an alien body recovered at Roswell, New Mexico. Originally released to a media frenzy in 1995, revelations in 2006 have since cast doubt on the providence of the film.

History

On May 5th 1995 a group of people - including UFO researchers, skeptics, and the media - were invited to the Museum of London to view film of an alleged alien autopsy on the body of an extraterrestrial recovered from the 'Roswell UFO crash' in 1947. The promoters of this film were individuals named Ray Santilli and Gary Shoefield. The film shows two scientists/doctors dissecting the body, whilst another takes notes. The film got worldwide press exposure and caused somewhat of a sensation at the time.

Santilli claims he first saw the film when an ex-army cameraman from Florida contacted him about the footage (said to consist of 22 reels of film each with 4 or 5 minutes).

Skepticism

While many found it difficult to accept the authenticity of the film - due to warning signs such as the blurring of the footage at key moments - perhaps the best evidence against the film was a warning sign hanging on a wall in the background. Representatives of OSHA, which approves warning signs, claimed that this particular sign was not produced until 1967 - some two decades after the film was said to have been made.

On the 4th of April 2006, British Sky Broadcasting featured a documentary titled "Eamonn Investigates: Alien Autopsy". In this programme, Santilli revealed that the alien autopsy footage was his creation. This documentary was timed to coincide with the release of a British comedy feature film called Alien Autopsy, on the very subject of Santilli faking the autopsy footage - Santilli and Gary Shoefield were executive producers of the film.

Santilli says his alien autopsy film was shot in an unused flat in London. The 'alien' is a mannequin created by artist and sculptor John Humphreys. The 'organs' of the 'alien' were sheep’s brains, legs and chicken offal.

Redux

However, in a further twist, Santilli and Shoefield now says that though they faked the alien autopsy film, it was based on the real footage revealed to them by the ex-army cameraman. They say that in the two years it took them to raise the funds to buy the footage, the film stock had degraded in the humidity of Florida. Thus, they decided to 'recreate' the footage to the best of their ability.

A review of the documentary at the Fortean Times website describes Santilli's 'revelations' as "the ultimate scam – the equivalent of burgling your house and then turning up and selling it all back to you."
